Author(s): Swaroopa Rani. V* and Swetha. U
Abstract: Objective: The present study was aimed to evaluate the root extract and its fractions of Antigonon leptopus Hook. et Arn for its in vitro antioxidant activity. Antioxidants are compounds which retard or prevent the oxidation and in general prolong the life of the oxidizable matter.
Methods: In this study the antioxidant activity was evaluated by various in vitro methods such as DPPH free radical scavenging activity, hydroxyl radical scavenging activity, nitric oxide radical scavenging activity and superoxide anion scavenging activity using methanolic extract(MEAL) and its different fractions ( EA-MEAL = ethyl acetate fraction, BN-MEAL= butan-2-one fraction, BL-MEAL= butanol fraction ) of Antigonon leptopus root. Results: The obtained results showed that methanolic extract and its fractions had shown to possess significant and dose dependent antioxidant activity. Conclusion: From the results it was concluded that methanolic extract and its fractions exhibited remarkable protective effects against free radicals and oxidizing agent.
